Port of Bandon Completes New High Dock Harbor Office Project

 

BANDON, Ore. – After many years of perseverance, the Port of Bandon has finished construction of the High Dock Harbor Office.  This project was originally envisioned by the Port over 20 years ago as a major component of the concrete high dock pier that was built by the Port around the year 2000.  The Harbor Office was never constructed at that time due to funding limitations and land use restrictions.

 

The project was re-designed in 2023 by the Port and HGE Architects (Joe Slack and Dominic Librie), scaling back the overall size and adding restrooms for the general public as well as showers for transient boaters.  Land use laws were re-analyzed and local permits were obtained by consultant Sherry McGrath, and a path forward was developed.

 

Funding was obtained by Oregon State Senator David Brock-Smith via an earmark through the legislative process.  Additional funding for the public bathrooms and showers was secured by Port staff through grants from the Oregon Marine Board and the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.

 

The location and visibility of the project, at the east end of the boardwalk between the marina and boat ramp, will significantly enhance public service.  It will also provide much needed additional public restrooms to visitors of the Port, including boaters and those using the public fishing pier, as well as visitors to Bandon’s Old Town. 

 

To stay within a modest budget, the Port was the general contractor and Port staff completed much of the work in-house such as wall framing, interior painting, interior trim, flooring and siding installation, and window and door installation.  Sub-contractors included West Coast Contractors for the concrete work, Kyle Electric, Tri-County Plumbing, Umpqua Sheet Metal, SHN Engineering, Coastline West Insulation, Felton Drywall, Clear Choice Glass, 541-Welding, Pioneer Roofing, and the Berry Brothers who competed the roof framing.

 

“This will be a great addition to the Boardwalk” stated Port Director Jeff Griffin.  “The concrete pier was built for this purpose many years ago and the need for improved public access and service has not diminished.  We were very fortunate to have funding support from the State of Oregon and to have a talented crew and subcontractors that could bring this project to fruition.”
